BRAND IDENTITY
The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is one of only six major zoo and aquarium hybrids in the United States. Its long standing logo, known for its clever use of negative space, has stayed recognizable but now feels dated and disconnected from the city.
I set out to create a modern identity that reflects Pittsburgh, appeals to both adults and kids, and uses a colorful palette with subtle nods to the city’s landscape. Through playful animal illustrations, vibrant patterns, and engaging posters, the refreshed brand highlights the zoo’s mission: connecting people with wildlife, inspiring communities, especially children, and promoting conservation for future generations.NOT JUST AN ELEPHANT LOGO
When creating the rebrand, I thought about ways to create a meaningful logo that related to the brand in some form, further than just a logo depicting animals. My final logo is derived from the three rivers in Pittsburgh, a recognizable shape. As seen above, you can see the elephant shape I drew from the three rivers. This logo connects to adults who recognize the shape, and kids, through the design of an elephant.
